Vectrex Timeline - What happened 30 years ago... ?

May of 1982:

Work is immediately started on other games such as the Vectrex original Cosmic Chasm. Conceptually designed by Jeff Corsiglia, and programmed by Bill Hawkins, this turned out to be the only game converted in to a coinop by the Cinematronics agreement. According to Bill, it only took him six weeks to do Cosmic Chasm (unlike the three months and 12 boxes of disks to do Rip Off) because while the rest of the programmers were out of town one weekend he stole two more drives from another programmer's setup.

Somewhere along the line, it was decided that color overlays would be used. Overlays, which originated in coinops, served a multitude of purposes. In the early through late 70's, coinops were in black and white. If you wanted color, you would literally affix colored cellophane strips to the monitor screen, such as was done in Atari's Breakout or Taito's Space Invaders. Likewise, if the playfield was to be to complicated to draw (be it in detail, or a color problem) because of the graphics limitations of the time, overlays could be used to render permanent backgrounds or give ambiance. Such as in the asteroid backround in Atari's Asteroid Deluxe, or the stairwell in Cinematronic's Warrior. Other overlays would be on the protective plastic screen itself instead of the monitor, and add anything from exciting borders to game instructions.

Come back to the VecNews, this series will be continued!

Demo for the Vectrex won 1 place!

Students at CMU's Computer Club obviously don't see much reason for preservation if it stops them from creating demos like the one below, which recently won first place at PixelJam, a demo competition taking place at Ohio arts and technology conference Notacon. Since no compositional software exists for the system, esteemed chip musician C-Jeff composed and ported over the music from a ZX Spectrum, which has the same sound chip as the Vectrex. They then ran the resulting audio through a preamp to eliminate the harsh buzzing sound that gets mixed into the signal due to the machine's screen. The tripod camcorder recording doesn't quite fully capture the cathode rays' hypnotic glow, but since the console has no video outputs it's the closest you're going to get without owning one of these rare machines.

Click the image to view the demo...

VGDB - Vectrex Game Database - relaunched

At the Vectrex Google Usergroup there was a long discussion of relaunching the website. Manu, the original founder sadly had no copy of the page but luckily there was a backup at webarchive.org. I got the permission by Manu to relaunch the page at vectrexmuseum.com

A Museum preserves important data - so I thought about recovering the most missed Vectrex pages. Today the series starts with the relaunch of the updated Vectrex Game Database. Other lost pages will follow.

I invested four days in recovering the page and need a little rest - so I added a
Tell a friend function so you can easily spread the word about the new VGDB. Please help me by telling your five best Vectrex friends about the relaunched VGDB.

And now... the big moment we have been waiting for:

relaunch VGDB at http://www.vectrexmuseum.com/mirror/vgdb/

Have fun,

Oliver

Instead of a standard TV monitor, which scans from top to bottom over and over again, the vector display draws straight lines from one point to the next where needed, like an oscilloscope. It can only be a simple polygon outline of one color, but it also means that the image is sharp and bright (Asteroids’s photon torpedoes leave a brilliant trace along the slowly-decaying phosphor of the screen), and simple to program (the video and sound data in the arcade version of Asteroids is just 2 KB of ROM code, and the game program is another 6 KB). It’s why www.atariasteroids.net have the Asteroids locator on the site: to this day, no home version or variation of Asteroids really does the same thing.

It performs specified tasks - potentially all the same ones as a native application - for the mobile user, usually by downloading part of the application to the device for local processing each time it is used. The software is written as Web pages in HTML and CSS, with the interactive parts in Java.
Short Update by George

Hello Vectrex Fans : ), a short update by George:

SUNDANCE
On schedule - just 3 weeks away! If you haven't pre-ordered yet, please do it! You get a free iron-on
transfer for pre-ordering. Sundance now has 4 different game modes (originally only 3 were planned).
The game is super fun with 1 or 2 players!
www.furyunlimited.com/_sgg/m1_1.htm

WARRIOR - Last Call!
There are 7 Warrior games remaining for pre-order, #'s 93-99 (#100 was sold early by request).
Several people have requested that I hold a game for them, but at this point with so few remaining
and my desire to sell this out, payment is required. These will sell first-come first-served,
so please get your payment in as soon as possible. I am not planning a second run of these.
It's too expensive to have the overlays made with a minimum 100 units at this cost, and
I will not sell this game in a stripped down version primarily because the overlay defines the
entire play area. Please hurry!
www.furyunlimited.com/_sgg/m1m1_1.htm

Next email update will be when Sundance is released at the end of the month.
The Sundance web page will be updated prior to the release (additional screenshots, etc).

George

This will be identical in every way to the original release, so if you already own it there is no need to purchase it again.
FURY updates

A note by George from FURY:

I've added a screenshot to the webpage, and will also add a sampling of the Tripod animation in a couple of weeks.

I've spent many hours meticulously re-creating the animation based on the Cinematronics original. I made a few minor graphical changes to better suit the Vectrex. This has taken a lot longer than anticipated, and so I must change the release to late April. My apologies, but the game will be worth the wait!

All pre-ordered Zantis games (1st and 2nd editions) have shipped.
If you haven't picked up Zantis, now is the time!

CGE
The show has been canceled this year! : (
I was looking forward to attending, because I wanted to
release this at the opening of the show...

The Vectorbeam classic! Announced for an August release!

Updated game play includes the original 2-player game + an all new single-player campaign mode with multiple enemies! Battle the dreaded Warhorse! Annihilate the Warlok and all of his mystical powers! 7 warriors in all! Warrior will be the first Fury game to include an overlay, and will also come in an original Vectrex-style box. The game will not be released in a stripped down version for a lower price and that decision is solely based on the fact that the overlay defines the game play area in this game. It's a part of the visuals, and not merely an enhancement. I can't think of another Vectrex game where that's true (correct me if I'm wrong).

I won't hesitate to admit that the price is heftier than my usual game prices, but that should be expected as the overlays/boxes are being professionally manufactured. The additional amount that I'm charging ($30) will barely cover the additional costs. I have already gone over this with the printing company that I'm using. It all boils down to thousands of dollars that I will be fronting for this project.

I recommend getting your pre-order in as soon as you can. This is a limited run of 100 games. No guarantees on a second run, which would require at least an additional 50 (over the initial 100) pre-orders for me to commit to it due to the minimum overlay purchase required by my printer.

Pre-ordering is open! $65 + s/h ($7.50 US/CAN - $15 ALL OTHERS). Slightly higher shipping to accommodate the larger box/packaging. As always, insurance is extra. Please allow up to 24 hours for order confirmation (includes serial #). The games will be numbered in the program, and also on the boxes this time. Like War of the Worlds, Warrior is another game that simply needed a Vectrex release and I'm happy to be the one to do it! This will be my final Vectrex game release for 2011.

If you look for information about Vectrex, and how the thing is programmed, you have come to the right place. There are not many places where you will find so much information about the Vectrex programming as this little place. These pages will not stagger you with blinding graphics, they actually will be quite boring for people not interested in vectrex programming and technical details. This collection of Vectrex programming related documents was started by Chris Salomon and is now maintained by the museums staff.

Now the complete collection is online again! Added the missing pages and TXTs.
Permanent exhibition of the Computerspielemuseum

The new permanent exhibition of the Computerspielemuseum opens up to visitors on January 21st, 2011. The museum is located in Berlin-Friedrichshain. Visitors are taken on a historical journey covering the highlights of a process that started 60 years ago. "The Computerspielemuseum is an asset to Berlin’s cultural landscape," said the mayor of Berlin, Klaus Wowereit, on the occasion of the opening. "I am happy to see that this young medium has at last found a suitable home here."

More than 60 years ago the computer became a gaming machine. Since then, digital games have contributed more to the diffusion of computers than any other application. The message of this new medium is interaction, suitable for daily use and creative possiblities, today already realised in global, interactive organised networks. In just a few years the digital game has changed the societal communication fundamentally - as printing and film have already done before. A long time misjudged as children‘s toy, computer and video games are increasingly at the focus of interest inside society.

New Page: Vectrex Wiki(as)

Quoting a Mail by Vectrex Fan Derryl B.:

I started getting into Wikias several months ago, and seeing that there wasn’t one for the Vectrex, I started my own!

http://vectrex.wikia.com/wiki

In case you get a 404 error there, there should be a place to click on a site link and that will take you there...if not, go with this full address:

http://vectrex.wikia.com/wiki/Vectrex_Wiki

BTW, for those that are confused as to the difference between Wikipedia and Wikias (as I’ve been asked that before), individual Wikias are geared towards one subject in particular, such as Star Wars, Star Trek, reptiles, the Glee tv show, cooking, etc. Also, Wikipedia forbids certain information for gaming entries, such as not noting how many points is required to get to a next level, an entry can’t be written like a guide, score tables should be omitted, etc. With a Wikia though, you can do all of this and more!

This is looking to become THE biggest resource of this kind, what with full game and even homebrewer entries, as many of these entries don't even have a Wikipedia page. Nearly all of the game entries up to now are full entries written by myself, most of which I either own, used to own or am very familiar with...hardly any ‘stub’ articles with those. (Note: several will say at the bottom they were taken from another Wikia, although I still wrote those elsewhere, and being a Wikia, I can bring them over here.)

And as far as the latter goes, there is currently only one entry for a homebrewer right now, although there should be entries at some point for Classic Game Creations (John Dondzilla) and Tutstronix (K. Tuts), I’m just waiting to hear some final details from them before putting up their respective pages. (Also, if George P. from FURY Unlimited and Mark Shaker are reading this and have my old e-mail address, please contact me, as I had sent e-mails to you guys in regards to getting some info up as to your Vectrex contributions, which I haven’t heard anything back, but my e-mails didn’t come bouncing back either. You guys have done more than enough to earn inclusion into this site.)

Also, if anyone is familiar with Wikipedia and/or Wikia coding (several things work with both, some don’t), please get in touch with me, as I’m looking for an admin or two, especially anyone overseas (/not here in the States), particularly in regards to the time difference. I can be reached at my YouTube page (I'm Darrylb500) or by posting on the front Discussion page of the Wikia. (If you’re like me where you don’t want to post your e-mail address online [sorry for any inconvenience], let me know and I can edit it out from a post from the latter once contact has been established.)

===  DEBRIS REVISITED ===

A note from Martijn at Revival Studios:

Exactly five years ago today, I announced my first Vectrex game: Debris. The game sold out quickly after its announcement and while I received much positive feedback on it, there were features that I wanted to include but couldn't at the time. Due to the large amount of graphic and music data, Debris took up almost every byte of the 32K available.

Now to celebrate its fifth anniversary, I am happy to announce Debris Revisited. Ideas I wanted to include in the original and feedback given by players have been mixed with additional features to create a new version of Debris that will hopefully please all.

New aspects to Debris Revisited include:

- New levels and enemy attack patterns
- Internet high score uploading
- Lives and level progress indicators
- More challenging boss fights
- Intelligent respawning upon death
- Improved gameplay

- Enemy fire
- New bonus game Astrododge
- Unlockable content

Besides the features above, there are also a lot more subtle changes that will improve the gameplay in general. So whether you'd like to try the new Debris, have a crack at the online scoring, or couldn't get in on the action the first time around... here is your chance! A trailer of the game is online at: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lG2Oh6R5RGw

Debris Revisited is scheduled to be released this December. Exact details on date and price to follow. Reservation can be made by mailing to: preorders@revival-studios.com

Vectrex Mini-Cade Data Recovered

Before the Mini-Cade was discovered, it was rumored to exist as several people reminded an arcade cabinet in the public areas playing Minestorm. This could be the system they saw. There are seven systems known to exist. Two systems were found in the Massachusetts state.

The Minicade is a table-top arcade system that was built in 1982 by a society named ESI in the Boston area in the USA. The Mini-Cade is interesting for the Vectrex collectors because it's built arround a vectrex system. It's like if the Vectrex system was taken back to its original roots: after all, the Vectrex was made to bring home the arcade excitement.
Many thanks to the owners Nico and Chris for offering photos and informations!

Read our Mini-Cade Article in the System Section
